Guyette & Schmidt Summer Decoy Auction Grosses $1.5 Million

Portsmouth, New Hampshire-Guyette & Schmidt,Inc, conducted their annual summer decoy auction on July 19 & 20.2011.  the auction was held at the Sheraton Harborside Hotel in Portsmouth. New Hampshire,.The auction grossed $1.5 million with 31 lots selling for over $10.000. As was the case in their April 2011 auction. prices remained steady. Top lot in the sale was a willet  by Elmer Crowell of East  Harwich. Massachusetts, which sold for $57.500. A very rare curfew by Walter Brady (Oyster.Virginia) sold for $48.875. Shorebird decoys brought strong prices throughout the sale. A black bellied plover by Daniel Lake Leeds sold for $20.800, a knott from Cobb Island,Virginia brought $25.875,a feedind yellow legs from Massachusetts brought $11.500 ,and a golden plover by Elmer Crowell  sold for $13.800. Frank Schmidt, Gary Guyette and John Deeter assembled over 600 decoys and related items from collections and directly out of houses all over the United States and Canada.prices for Virginia decoys, Mason Factory decoys. decoratives by the Ward Brothers, and Maine decoys were particularly strong. The sale featured decoys from the collections of Don Clark. Betty Williford, Phil Williamson Richard Perkins.Herb hancock,Lynn Robertson,Harold Coe, Howard Wadell. and Jack Milne.

A significant increase in internet bidding was noted at the auction. Internet bidders usually bid on less expensive items at Guyette & Schmidt Inc, auctions but at this one they bid on multi-thousand dollar items as well resulting   in over $87.000 in internet sales. At this auction Guyette & Schmidt ,Inc .used "live streaming' video of the sale on screen with their Artfact bidding.

In January 2007 Guyette &Schmidt,Inc, in conjunction with Christie's ,sold the Alvin Freidman-Kein  Decoy Collection for $2.3 million, In the sale a merganser hen circa 1870 by Lothrop Holmes was sold for the current auction  record for any decoy at $856,000

Guyette & Schmidt ,Inc's next decoy auction will be held on November 9 &10,  at the Talbot County Community Center in Easton,Maryland. Consignment deadline for this auction is September 16.
