Rookwood Pottery founder Maria Longsworth Nichols was born on March 20. 1849. in Cincinnati.Ohio, the daughter   of Joseph  and Annie (Rives) Longworth .
She married George Worth Nichols in 1868. In 1880 , Mrs Nichols founded Rookwood Pottery  naming it for the Longworth Estate. She was the first decorator  in her pottery company and she used  the initials M.L.N. .in signing her pottery.
Mrs. Nichols had two children . Joseph Longworth  Nichols and Margaret Rives Nichols, who by her marriage became the  Countess De  Chambrum , George Ward Nichols died September 15 .1885. and in the spring of the following year , on March 20.1866, Mrs Nichols married Bellamy Storer, She then signed her ware  with the initials M.L.S. . Mr Storer's  Government appointment  took them to Madrid and Vienna and other foreign places to live. Maria Longsworth  Storer died on April 30.1932 at the home of her daughter. the Countess de Chambrun of Paris. Frabce
